Lucian Bernhard Pastiche

Developed during the summer of 2023, this piece was created as a poster paying homage to the German graphic designer Lucian Bernhard.
He is known to many as the inventor of the “sachplakat” or “object poster.”  His style is defined by his use of graphic reduction and bold, vibrant colors. The prevalent art movements of Jugendstil and Art Nouveau were inspirations for his use of color and form. Specific influences include Poster Designs by Alphonse Mucha & The Beggarstaffs. He would go on to create posters for notable industrial companies such as Bosch. Bernhard also developed several typefaces, most notably Bernhard Modern (used in Michael Jackson’s HIStory album & the credits of The Twilight Zone.) His object oriented designs would go on to influence modern advertisement designs.
The final design utilizes a graphically reduced MacBook Pro as the “object” being advertised and features the famous “hello” script designed by Susan Kare featured in many Apple presentations and advertisements. The typeface used is Bernhard’s own Bernhard Modern. A rough texture was applied over the image to mimic lithograph process textures.
